common peroneal nerve 2
Back
Forward
The common peroneal nerve is the most frequently injured nerve of the lower limb. This nerve is commonly injured by a fracture of the neck of the fibula. Signs of injury to this nerve involve the muscles innervated by the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The test for the superficial peroneal nerve involves eversion of the foot against resistance (testing peroneus longus and peroneus brevis). The deep peroneal nerve is evaluated by asking the patient to dorsiflex the foot against resistance or walk on his/her heels (testing the muscles of the anterior compartment and the dorsum of the foot). In addition deep peroneal nerve can be assessed by testing sensation of the web of skin between the big toe and the 2nd toe.
