Recall that level 1 lymph nodes are those axillary nodes located lateral to the pectoralis minor (as referred to by surgeons - see below).

When sampling axillary nodes for breast cancer, note that the nodes are classified into groups. Level 1 nodes include those nodes lateral to the pectoralis minor and include the pectoral, subscapular, lateral, and some central nodes. Level 2 modes are located deep to pectoralis minor and include most of the central nodes. Level 3 nodes are located medial to pectoralis minor and include the apical nodes. The lower nodes are more likely to receive spread of mammary carcinoma. ~75% of the lymph drainage of the breast goes to the axillary nodes (via the pectoral nodes), while ~25% drains to the parasternal nodes.
