intercostobrachial nerve
Back
Forward
The intercostobrachial nerve is often sacrificed during axillary node dissection, resulting in numbness of the posteromedial aspect of the upper arm. During an axillary dissection, the surgeon must be careful to preserve the thoracodorsal nerve, long thoracic nerve (nerve to serratus anterior), and the thoracodorsal artery. Preservation of the latter is especially important if the surgeon needs to use the latissimus dorsi muscle for breast reconstruction. When sampling nodes in the axilla along the axillary vein for breast cancer, remove the nodes in the concavity of the vein this is because breast lymph drains to the nodes on the concavity, whereas lymph from the upper limb drains to the nodes in the convexity of the vein.
