axillary artery

Forward
The subclavian artery becomes the axillary artery at the lateral border of the first rib. If one of the subclavian arteries is occluded prior to the origin of its vertebral branch, it can still receive collateral circulation from the contralateral subclavian artery due to an anastomosis where the 2 vertebral arteries come together to form the basilar artery. Unfortunately, blood to the brain is also diminished and have the potential to cause (infrequently) neurological symptoms such as dizziness or a feeling of fainting and rarely visual or coordination disturbances. Symptoms may only arise when the limb on the side of the occlusion is exercised.
