The supraclavicular nerves are derived from cervical ventral rami C3-C4, as is the phrenic nerve (C3-C5). Thus mediastinal or central diaphragmatic pain may be referred to the shoulder (the supraclavicular nerves innervate subcutatneous tissue found in the shoulder). This may also explain why referred pain from the gallbladder can sometimes be felt in the right shoulder. |
