deep peroneal nerve

Anterior tibial compartment syndrome may occur when a normally sedentary individual subjects the muscles within this compartment to strenuous exercise. Because this compartment (as well as the peroneal and deep posterior compartments) is inexpansible due containment by bone and fascia, swollen muscles will cause pressure to build up within the compartment and ischemia of the contained structures may result. In this case, the deep peroneal nerve will be affected and the patient may experience tingling or diminished sensation over the dorsal web of the skin between the first and second toes. Note that the nerves are most sensitive to oxygen deprivation; the muscles will be affected shortly after.
